Background: Marty was born in New York and lost his parents at a very young age. He grew up with his aunt and uncle who weren’t nice people, and he ended up becoming a somewhat of a troublemaker in school, despite being an incredibly clever and able student. He dropped out of school early, bored because it was too easy for him. After stumbling across a murder and managing to solve it using the evidence provided even before the NYPD had figured it out, he decided to join the police, excited at the possible challenges. He became a great cop and was liked by many of the officers there, with a good career ahead of him. But a huge case changed that, when he was caught up in a car chase and the car they were chasing turned out to be from a huge criminal gang, who called for back up. Another car slammed into his police car from the side, sending it flying. Marty survived the collision but was trapped in the car along with his best friend. He managed to pull both of them loose from the wreckage, but not quickly enough as the car exploded after the leaking petrol was ignited by a spark. Marty was knocked back by the force away from the car, but his best friend died in the explosion. Marty was unconscious in hospital for a week before he finally came around, suffering from severe burns and PTSD. He plunged into depression for months afterwards as his sharp mind was unable to focus on anything other than guilt and flashbacks. He knew that he needed to get away from New York, so once he had recovered, he handed in his notice at the NYPD and decided to travel. He went all over the world, taking in cultures everywhere, filling his brain with information to try and combat the PTSD. His money eventually ran out in England, and he decided to stay for a little while, enjoying the people and the city of Manchester. This turned into months, and then years, as he grew to call Manchester his new home. However, he missed the buzz of the police service, and decided to join again, training as a Constable for Manchester Police. He flourished once again, but this time, wasn’t as popular and was resented for his skills and for his unorthadox methods by certain officers. He found himself dismissed from the police service during a tough case in which he got too involved with a gang of drug addicts and took matters into his own hands and became a Private Detective. He now lives a double life as part of the gang, which causes him to uncover dark secrets about the inner workings of Manchester Police.
Despite his addiction and past, Marty is friendly, talkative and outgoing. He has moments where his PTSD causes him anxiety, but he tries to push through it as best he can.
